It's time I thought about sowing my melons and cucumbers, so I thought I'd ask for advice on where best to put them after they germinate, as I had troubles with this last year.
My conservatory still gets pretty cold at night this time of year, and is too cold, really, for tender seedlings just yet. They don't die, but they tend to stall and just sit there not growing. I've also had problems with fungus gnats eat the roots and stems of slow-growing seedlings in the past.
I don't have room in my heated propagator for them.
I tried putting them on my (south-east facing) bedroom and bathroom windowsills last year, but after a week or two the leaves started to go beige and crispy in places. I'm fairly sure it was sun scorch.
So, any suggestions? I was thinking maybe a windowsill on the other side of the house (NW facing). Or perhaps just having them tough it out in the conservatory, and cover the soil (or the whole plant) with something to keep the fungus gnats out.
