  • Raised beds an interesting tip - Pallet Collars

I seen these on another forum and thought it worth sharing. Years ago I remember suppliers using them on pallets to protect equipment mostly suppliers from Germany & Denmark.

Keep an eye out for any you might spy as they are ready made raised beds

They're great as raised beds, but I would definitely recommend treating them as they tend to be made out of softwood.
I don't use any borders on the allotment but I'm setting a raised bed up on an well-placed concrete path in my back garden. I will treat the wood, then line them with plastic to protect them. They look great too! Check out Ghexton's pics!

I inherited some on my plot but the boards are coming apart, warping and rotting. They definitely need either treating or being lined with plastic.

I’ve acquired some. They’ll be for my new veggie garden.
You can buy them off eb@y. I prefer the free ones

I did put a picture of them on here last year. Can’t remember where or when, and can’t be bothered fighting with the forum search facility.

I used a few but even treated thier dont last long, if you do acquire some remember to use a preservative that is soil friendly.

Was hoping to get some off my mate who works from B&Q, were apparently selling them at 50p each money going to charity. Not available in the shop these were used for deliveries received.

He's off for another 4 weeks after knee surgery but i'm still hoping.
              Cheers

I have range of different experiments on going with these.

                - already painted black, not lined.
-non painted/sealed, lined with plastic and layer of sand at the base
-non painted/sealed, no lining and cardboard at base.

Ill keep you informed how they last. I paid £2.50 a collar for the painted ones from Lincolnshire reclamation yard. Was like gold dust though didnt have many. The unpainted and untreated i got for free from work.

That's a really good idea - they'd make good little compost bins wouldn't they?
