Gardening with small children

So my 2 1/2 year old really likes being helpful and doing jobs as many of them do. She's also quite at home helping (as much as she can) in the garden. For instance yesterday she helped plant a new tree (was digging out soil with her little spade and bucket). Today we were planting broad beans. My plan was for me to make holes with dibber and get her to drop seeds in and cover up.
This however didn't happen as she wanted to use the dibber herself. I know some of the seeds went in holes I made but as seed distribution and hiding was "my job daddy not for you" I couldn't get near the seeds to know where all of em went. Should be interesting in a little while when they germinate.

While my sister and I were chatting one year my helpful toddler niece (now at university) "sorted out" all my seed potatoes into size order. There were three varieties in three trays originally.......afterwards one tray of small, one medium and one large. An interesting year! Fortunately when they grew the foliage was slightly different on the different varieties.

The way I see it, for anything my children have helped with, if it grows it's a bonus! This year is the first year my 5 year old has actually been more help than hindrance when it comes to sowing. My 2 year old is great at watering, as long as it's well established plants that can cope with being drowned!

My kids and grandkids all liked sowing and eating peas not many used to make it to the kitchen.

My two have been helping lately, and eldest sowed a whole pack of lollo rosso in one row! My fault, didn't make clear how thinly to do it. We've decided to prick them out into different tubs and share with friends if we have to many.

I like having them in the garden, and they're getting more useful as they get older. They're doing the cubs and beavers gardening badge while schools closed, you have to help look after a garden for two months!
