Will this work?

I think this is a brilliant plan . While pricking out seedlings this afternoon I had a moment of inspiration. Wanting an early crop of as much as possible and not want to use all my compost filling big tubs. Also it being to early to plant out and I’ve not treated the beds with nematodes, again to early. I came up with this.



Turnip purple topped Milan in a pot tray. One seedling to a pot space. So I can move them in and out as required and protect from slugs.

What do you think ? Will it work?

One way to find out, I generally have little slug problems, too cold and dry on the NE Scotland coast.

You mean grow them to maturity in there?
It might work, but they'll need a lot of water (probably twice a day once they start swelling), and they'll also need feeding a couple times a week once they start getting bigger, as that tiny volume of compost won't hold enough to sustain them.

I did instantly think of you when I came up with the idea

I’d assumed I’d need to water & feed more regularly due to minimal compost.

I can't find my old thread but I think it was something about growing different veg in each "hole". I like the way each hole connects to the next for watering.
It might have been to put the trays on the beds so that the tray was a "soil cover/weed suppressant" whilst the veg roots could work their way into the soil. Maybe..........??

You'd need to watch out for slugs and snails hiding underneath - lots of nice crevices for them to lurk in.

And why did you think it was a crazy idea
As for watering surely you just need to sit it outside for a couple of hours every day
But I do like the idea and will give it a go

You could pop the tray in another tray that you water and feed - kind of hydroponically I guess?

As I dont have a 12 pot tray I have used a 24 pot tray and hopefully if it works I will be able to harvest turnips a lot earlier than normal, so thanks for this thread Sp
