  • Okra or Yard Long Bean

I was about to make an online order when I noticed that they also sell seeds for Okra and Yard Long Bean (aka Long Bean). Before I decide to buy, it'd be useful to know if anybody have ever had success with them growin in the UK.

I've scoured the grapevine past threads and the internet but nowhere have I come across a positive go ahead recommendation. My thoughts are they don't work in British weathers yet I'm puzzled why the seed companies continue to sell them. BTW, I have no greenhouse, even worse in my case.

Several seed companies are now selling Okra seeds. My own thought is that they would probably not do too well in UK, but I've never tried them. Depends I suppose on how cheap the seeds are as to whether it would be worthwhile trying them. No experience of yardlong bean.

My okras died - I did an early and a later batch and none of them got past about 20 cm and certainly no fruits - I sowed my yard long beans a bit late (bought the seed too late in the season) and although they are still growing up the poles I doubt I'll get any fruit with it being so late in the season and the Autumnal weather we've been having. I'll no doubt try again next year though!

P.S. My okras were in a greenhouse and still died!

I grew the yard long beans last year and even though it was a good summer they struggled. I even made a makeshift cloche around the wigwam of bean poles but didn't even get one bean an inch long, never mind a yard!
I suspect they would even have struggled inside my greenhouse!

I planted several okra and they didn't get beyond about 15cm before dying either!

Won't be bothering with 'em again!

Thank you all for your replies. I had better saved my money...it's obvious Okra and Long bean are still a 'no go' area of veggies.
