e troughs you've described are ideal for cut-and-come-again salads. Green or red Salad Bowl lettuce are good for this. Mizuna, Red mustard, Rocket, etc. Pak Choi Chinese leaves for stir fry. Spinach for baby leaf.

Snoop Puss: I'm growing mixed beet as microgreens so I can always sow some individually and drop in places that have just been harvested.
Mr Bones: Stir fries are almost a daily thing for me, so the more ingredient choices the better. Thanks for the tip.
Penellype & Small Pumpkin: Thanks for the info on courgettes. I might try one up against the wall in an old 10 litre paint bucket. I've got some netting left so nothing to lose, I guess.
Small Pumpkin: Wow... I just looked up radish seed pods and now I'm determined to leave some later summer sowings to flower. I had no idea the pods were that big. They look like a decent size for stir-fries or, umm... projectiles.
Bren In Pots: Newspaper pots... what a great idea. I'm trying to keep to my initial small budget so don't wish to buy another pack of fibre pots. I'll have to break out my non-origami skills.
Bonjour: I completely forgot about mustard. A great suggestion. I'm covered on the rest.
Thanks again everyone for all the suggestions and information.
