I have never had much luck with the oriental ones . I've done them in shallow trays previously. Wondering if need a bit more depth ? A trough or pot perhaps?

Oriental salads do have deeper roots than lettuces, so it could be that you are not giving them enough depth of soil/compost. I grow them in pots or mushroom trays that have about 4-5 inches of compost. You do need to catch them quickly though as they soon bolt, particularly at this time of year and if sown close together.A life is like a garden.
