  • Mixing with mushroom compost

Hi everyone, a quick question pertaining to compost, if I may?

I’m going to do some more veg this year in pots (quite a few pots it has to be said) together with a number of crops in a bed which I’ve carved out as a vegetable plot. I’ve added compost to the plot, together with a few spoonfuls of fish, blood and bone.

Now, to the pots. I have some bags of Westlands multi-purpose with added John Innes together with some bags of New Horizons. I have many pots, but I don’t think I have enough bags of compost to stretch across all of my pots and, given the current situation, I’m finding it quite hard to source more bags. I do though have some leftover mushroom compost from last year which my landscape gardeners used when we totally redesigned the garden.

My question: Do you think it would be OK if I mixed some of the compost (from bags) that I have with this mushroom compost for those crops that I’m going to grow in the pots? I’m going to grow the following in pots: runner beans; broad beans (Sutton); aubergines; peppers; tomatoes; courgettes. Are there any in that list where a mixture with mushroom compost might be detrimental?

Apologies in advance if this sounds like a dumb question. Thank you, in advance, for any help that you might be able to provide.

    Kind regards,

    Marbles

Mushroom compost is fine for most purposes, but it can be very alkaline sometimes. So if you are intending to use it in containers you'll either need to check its ph first and/or keep any plants such as say blueberries which like acid compost away from it.

I agree with what nick has said, but if it has been exposed to the elements since last year it might not be a problem I would mix the two and either check the PH or simply try some seeds in a small pot of the mix, personally I would bung it in and see how they do
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.
