  • White Emergo runner beans

I really wanted some of the Gigantes seeds but because they were being shipped from abroad I was unable to get them.

I have managed to purchase a couple of packets of White Emergo which looks to have white beans, just not as big as the Gigantes.

I don't normally grow runners as I find them too coarse to eat but I thought I would grow some for the beans alone. It didn't mention how many beans were in each packet, hence reason for buying two, just in case.
Most plants stop growing once they have set seed so I wondered what was the best way to grow them for beans alone, and keep them cropping. Any tips would be appreciated.

As I grow climbing French beans as well I also wondered whether they would cross pollinate?

Sadger, treat the bigger white seeds like emergo white lady ext as butter beans, they do expand a lot when soaked and cooked,i just let them get on with it,as soon as some start to go brown pods, pick em off,you can also freeze them,i found as dried they do smell foisty being in a sealed jar, unless i not dried em long enough.

I'm not keen on runners either so grow the Enorma runner beans for beans. Just grow them as you normally would but leave the pods to brown and dry on the plant. You will get plenty. I don't believe runners cross with french beans but someone will know better.

I suspect you indeed didn't dry them long enough.
My dried runner beans don't smell of anything, but my dried French beans did, and after a couple months some even started developing a tiny spot of mould where the seed germ is - this despite the beans being rock hard and feeling completely dry.
I assumed they must still be harboring moisture, despite seeming completely dry, so I put them in an old ice cream tub and left them on top of the radiator over night. I left the lid on. Big mistake. When I looked at them the next day, the lid was dripping with water, and there were puddles of it in the bottom of the tub.
It just goes to show how much water seemingly "dry" beans could still be holding.

You are a gem VC, thank you very much. I will pm you my address but feel guilty because I have no seeds to send you in return.

I could send you a shoe box full of runners when they mature though!

"Shoebox full of runners"? Are they trainers. Snadge?

No need for a swap - its my pleasure. They're a couple of years old so no guarantees that they'll even germinate, let alone produce the goods. Fingers crossed for you!

Snadger, I posted them today - though missed the collection. Didn't want them stuck in the postbox over Easter.

Thanks VC the beans arrived safely today.

The dog did try to grab them but luckily I have a cage fitted to the back of the letterbox.

Its still a bit early to plant them so I will just hang fire for a while. Cheers once again.

Pleased they've arrived Snadger. The post is so slow at the moment I was getting worried.

I'm going to start some too.
