  • Anyone grown any ginger?

    Hi,

Just wanted to know if anyone has tried growing ginger? I bought some to plant from wilkos a while ago because it seemed like an interesting thing to grow.

Any ideas about where to grow, when to plant and harvesting would be much appreciated. As well as any other advice pertaining to the growing of ginger.

Thanks, stay safe and happy growing people.

      I tried 2 years ago.
I grew a piece in a large planter full of compost which I left in my greenhouse with the tomatoes.
It grew, looked a little like a pampas grass, but I'll be honest, the rhizome was no larger at the end of the year than it was when I put it in.

It's something that needs to be gown over a few seasons by the sounds of things.

Unless you grow it indoors in a heated greenhouse, this country isn't really hot enough to get a decent ginger crop.
However, growing it yourself is a good way of getting fresh ginger. The freshly grown root sections are different to the ginger you buy in the shops. You can sometimes find fresh ginger in Asian supermarkets, but never in normal supermarkets. Fresh ginger is milder and more tender, and is what they use to make crystallised stem ginger, as well as pickled ginger. You can tell the fresh part because it has paler, smoother skin.
I grew some shop bought ginger in pots last year. The pots were too small, i grew them outside, and I didn't feed them, and by October I had about a thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger to show for it. Not much, but if you look after them better you'd probably get more.
