When do people start their sweetcorn? Haven't grown it for a couple of years so cant remember. I know it is a bit tender so thought it was later than my courgettes. I started those inside and they are growing happily on the windowsill. I am up north so usually need to be a bit later than those further south. My last frost day is about 2 weeks into may. I have an unheated greenhouse so could put them out during the day and bring in at night if need be. Thanks

I have started one tray of sweetcorn and it's had to take up residence in the coldframe greenhouse I have outside, and it's probably way too cold for them to germinate. I'll clear some space for them indoors tomorrow I think.

I usually start mine mid-April.
It is much milder down here, mind you. Most years, my last frost is the first week of April. Wouldn't be surprised if I don't get any more frosts this year until late November.

Mine went in last weekend in propogators in the greenhouse. Got one possible sprout

Given a bit of heat and some moisture they germinate very quickly - like 2-3 days at 20°C so if you get behind you can catch up.

Yeah, I sprout mine on damp tissue in the heated propagator before potting them up. They usually sprout in less than 48 hours.

Mine are the same - I’ve planted too many seeds in the greenhouse so the sweet corn went into modules in the big propagator on my garden table. Hope they grow, I love sweet corn.

I always check the year befores seed sowing thread,18th April last year but on the 24th - 29th the moons waxing crescent a good time to sow cereal crops & above ground annuals,I think I’ll wait till then & have some moon help

Mine are about an inch high. Chitted them indoors and then planted in root trainers in the greenhouse. At night I put a clear plastic lid over them.

I moved the ones I had put outside in the coldframe back into the house a couple of days ago, and it's almost like clockwork, 40 odd hours later, they appear. Aren't you guys so clever lol

I have more sweetcorn to sow - that will be tomorrow's job, along with all the cukes

Mine are in the warmth aka the sunny front porch and into the kitchen at night. I read somewhere that they don’t like to be transplanted so have sown in my deepest modules. They would be bound to be excavated by something if sown direct.

Oh sod it going to put them in this week. I can start them inside and put them out in the gh during the day. One benefit of working at home is I can move things in and out.
