  • Growing Salad leaves in a container

I want to try growing cut and come again salad leaves in a container and have a couple of questions to start with.

    1) How deep a container should I use.
    wl
    2) Do salad leaves need a sunny or shady location.

I have purchased: Lettuce Salad Bowl Green and Lettuce Gourment Loose leaf Salad is that makes any difference to the advice. Thanks.

A few years ago I grew some lettuce leaves in a shallow pot about 15cm deep & about 30 cm wide,it looked so nice in the middle of the patio table, mixed red & green that I couldn’t eat it,once you eat it it’s gone, sow some every two weeks or four weeks, you’ll have more for the future.

Part shade is good, I find they can get frazzled in full sun.

For loose-leaf lettuce for cutting, troughs or similar size pots are fine. That's what I do mine it. I also agree partial shade is best.

If you ever try to grow spinach or brassica family salad leaves (kale, mustard, rocket, etc.) then a much larger tub is a must, however. They are not as drought tolerant as lettuce, and in a smaller, shallower tub will bolt almost immediately, no matter how much you try to water them.

I grow lettuce of all kinds of varieties in containers, but I don't cut them - they don't bounce back from that very well (or is it me cutting too heavily maybe?). I just pick off leaves from the bottom and they keep growing nicely
I use window boxes for mine - bit enough not to hvae to water too often.

I grow mixed salad leaves in self watering window boxes.
Semi shade seems to work best.
Salad leaves just seems to lie down and die in full sun.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

I have mostly used windowbox size containers, but some of these posts make me think I could conserve compost and grow in shallower trays. Thanks all!
