  • Splitting rhubarb stalks

As the title says. My rhubarb Timperley Early has grown away well. Third year. It has been well mulched and I have picked some already and it looks very healthy. However some of the stalks are collapsing and splitting as if they can't hold their weight. They often split near the crown so making it difficult to pull. I cant remember this problem last year. Do you have any suggestions please? Perhaps it is weather related??

Almost certainly the weather as you say - probably been hot I expect - not much to be done really, unless you fancy rigging up some netting to shade it a bit.

It only gets sun for 1/2 the day. Thanks. Perhaps like many things we grow it is struggling to cope with the all or nothing weather. Where are those April showers??

I have the same variety. The odd one or two of my stems have done the same. I just assumed it was wind damage. It’s definitely not to hot here. It’s a problem that’s not bothering me and I’m not doing anything about it. They’re still usable stems.

There are more than enough April showers! Just ssshh you
