  • wickes compost

Have run out of compost and panicking because I cant find any in my usual shops or delivery times are really long -like 3 weeks! It looks like i could order and do a click and collect from wickes with minimum order of 5 bags but never bought compost from there. Has anyone tried the wickes own make multi purpose? Is it ok?

I used it last year and have it again this year. It is quite fibrous/clumpy so not good for small seeds (unless you can sieve it) but works fine for the bigger ones and for potting on. Wickes also sell the Westland and Gro-sure brands at our local depot, have you checked yours for those, if you'd prefer them?

Yes they also seem to have gro sure and westland. Never tried them either. Also some called new horizon with no peat. I would like to use a non peat one but was put off when I tried the lidl peat free and it was not great. Would any of these other types be less fibrous. I use it for potting on my tomatoes but also chillies and am growing more flower seeds this year.

You might try driving around to the local Aldi stores. They seem to have a quite good compost this year. Quite fine and has a bit of sand in it, not just clumpy.
Location:- Rugby, Warwckshire on Limy clay (within sight of the Cement factory)

Boss got some from Aldi and it was quite a surprise how good it was. £1.99. for a 30 or 40 litre bag. Much easier to carry than my usual 80 litre bags of peat based compost.

I got some at Tesco when I was getting my shopping last week. Can't remember the brand but it was one of the big name ones. It was a Tesco superstore, you maybe wouldn't be lucky at a smaller one.

To be honest think I'll be distinctly unpopular if I suggest to my husband that he starts going round more supermarkets in the hope they have some stock. Think I'll try click and collect at wickes just not sure about the brands and since I have to buy 5 minimum didn't want to get stuck with poor quality stuff.

We're using New Horizons peat free, seems OK so far, although I'm not a compost connoisseur, everything is growing along nicely.

I am another one who forgot to get compost before all the shops closed.
My daughter discovered a store selling a little bit of hardware..
They only had John Innes no potting on compost.
                        35litre bags......€7.50 per bag.

New Horizon is a mix of wood fibre, coir and bio fibre (not exactly sure what that is!). It doesn't contain green waste any more. Used some last year when we ran out of homemade compost, it was pretty fluffy and everything planted in it did well.

I'm hoping to get some in Wilko Tuesday, I think it was £4 for 50l.
                            Cheers

Wilko's own was three bags for £6 a week ago.
