  • Aubergines! Too late to sow?

Hi! I’ve never grown aubergines before but just got hold of a pack of black beauty seeds. Now I’m wondering if I’m a bit late in the day to start?! My plan was to germinate in a heated propagator then grow inside one of those mini green houses (as I don’t yet have a proper greenhouse).
Also... might be a silly question, but would you keep the zips on the mini green house closed most of the time so it’s nice and humid in there? Or will not enough light get through?
    Thanks for any help/tips!

I think it's a bit late to get a decent crop....others may say to give it a go but I think they need a long growing season. Personally I would try something else to get the use out of your little grow house.

Anything in those plastic grow houses will fry in the sun if the zips arent opened up in the day. It's amazing how hot they become if on the sun.

I am absolutely not an expert in aubergines, but I would think you still have time to sow if you do it now.

With regard to leaving the door of the mini greenhouse shut, I wouldn't when it is warm and sunny. Those little greenhouses get very hot very quickly and in the sunshine the air will get hot enough to damage the plants. Something I do to provide ventilation without completely opening the cover if it is sunny but not that warm outside is to open one of the zips and peg the flap open with a clothes peg so that you have a smaller triangular opening.

Whereabouts are you Sarah? If you are in an area with a mild climate you might get away with sowing aubergines now but it will be touch and go whether your growing season will be long enough for them.
