  • Shallot sets - how deep to plant them?

As above. I bought them late, and as it was raining when I bought them, the paper bag they should have come in disintegrated and they came home damp in a olastic bag, so lots rotted. The remaining ones got olaced on compost in the greenhouse and most have rooted and a majority are sprouting nicely.

I'd like to get them out this weekend. I've never done any onion sets before. I've seen others on the site lay them out on top of the soil in autumn, but I don't know what happens from there.

Should I bury the bulb? Mostly bury it? Just roots in the soil?

I plant them mostly in the soil but with the tip sticking out. Works for me.

I plant them out direct just below the surface as I've found that if the top of the bulb is visible birds dig them up ( not sure what they think they are). Once they have sprouted I just ignore them apart from the odd weeding spree.

Don't bury the sprouts if they are green. Plant them so just the green sprouts are showing.
