  • Overnight in the Garage?

Hey all, hope you are all enjoying the bit of sun this week. I have a fair few seedlings now, cucumber, tomato, french beans and pumpkins .

My question... I of course dont want to risk putting them out overnight yet, but would an unheated garage be safe do you think?

    Many Thanks

    Hi Roo,

It's not possible to answer that question without knowing how warm it is in the garage over night. Would you be able to put a thermometer in there and check?

Can you not drop them in a back room, rather than a garage? Even bring stuff inside in a corner on the floor with some paper under?

Anything other than a garage, unless it has some sort of heating. Those things can get cold in the middle of summer. Good for over wintering, but not for your spring chickens.

If the garage is attached to your house, then it would probably be warm enough. Maybe just keep them away from the doors, to avoid any cold drafts. I have all of my tender veg seedlings in my conservatory, and it's a pretty poorly insulated one, so I imagine it gets colder in there at night that it would in an attached garage.
A detached garage is likely to be colder, as it wouldn't benefit from warmth leaking from the house, so I'm not sure I'd risk that.

I'd not risk it, my toms, cucs and basil spend the day in the GH then its back indoors on the windowsills overnight. I've not sown my french beans or runners yet.
          Location....East Midlands.

Probably be 6 or 7 degrees warmer in a garage than outside, as long as the doors are closed and the plants are on a bench. So unless there is a frost in your area I'd say you'll be OK to do that.
