  • use of sharp sand

I must have mentioned getting sharp sand at some point as my husband came home with two bags yesterday. I cant remember what I was going to use it for though. Would it have been to mix with compost for chillies? Any ideas what I could use it for?

Seems wasted on chillis, or any other annual plant.

Sharp sand is good for potting mixes for long-term pots which need good drainage. I used some when I repotted my citrus today.
It's also good for improving clay soil, although two bags won't go far (maybe 2 square metres).

I use a lot of sharp sand to mix in with my compost and even more so just now when I am mixing it with soil (very limited supply of compost) I also use it for some cuttings as its cheaper than vermiculite, not that cost is very important if you are sowing seeds give a mix of 2 of sand to 1 of compost a try, or if potting on plants use 1 of sand to 3 of compost, expirament with your own mixto see what works best for you
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

Used neat sand to strike cacti and other succulents.

Seem to remember putting it at bottom of rose cutting trench,

In addition to the above good suggestions it is possible to mix fine seed with sand to make it easier to sow more evenly - also if you surface sow seed, then a little sand sprinkled on top will make it easier to keep damp.

Make my own potting compost, 1 bucket sieved soil, 1 bucket sieved home made compost, 1/2 bucket sharp sand and 3-4 handfuls organic fertilizer. Mixed well and away you go. Cheap?????
