  • Planting Out Courgettes and French Dwarf Beans

I have grown these from seed and kept in the garage bringing out to harden off.

Do you think they are ready for planting out or should I be waiting a couple of weeks.

I’m based in Sussex, where the weather has been magnificent the last couple of weeks but now overcast and showery for the next few days before picking up again.

    Your advice would be appreciated

Beans look good to go but I'd personally let the courgettes get a bit bigger before planting out.

I agree, your beans look ready to go, have a check on a local weather forecast for overnight temps for the next couple of weeks just to be on the safe side. I'd also wait for the courgettes to get bigger.

        Thanks

Will plant out the beans and leave the courgettes

Weather looks OK having checked XCweather with the coldest 4 C overnight on Friday.

have you had your beans outside in the day?

Mine are going out this weekend. Last year, I put them out, and something ate the whole fricking lot, so I had to get another lot germinated quickly.

I am hardening mine off in the day, not least to thicken up their stems and make them less appealing to the herbivores of the parish...

My courgettes, among other stuff are staying put. They are in the greenhouse with insulation over them and I checked they were ok this morning, fearing the worst!

I am more northerly than you lot so can't comment on your situation.

4c is cold, especially for young tender plants. Personally I try to wait until nights are 10c.

I'd say the weather is too cold yet.
As for the plants themselves, as said before, the beans look good to go but the courgettes definitely need more time. I would wait until they have at least two good-sized true leaves each.

Of course, having said that about the weather, there are always exceptions. Runner beans were planted out in a front garden I pass on the way to my allotment in early April. I thought for sure they would regret it, it was way too early, and we have indeed had several cold (although not frosty) nights since then, yet despite my predictions those beans are now some 2 feet up the canes, all looking healthy.
I guess the lesson is that microclimate can count for a lot.

My courgettes spend the day in the GH then back into the house overnight, not sown French or runner beans yet. Me personally wouldn’t plant them out but I live further north than you.

I'm in Kent and I wont be putting out courgettes for another month yet (way too cold, they sulk something terrible!!). Not actually sown any beans yet, but I'd not put them out before the last frost date (mid-May for us if I remember rightly). Also will be slug paradise with all the rain we're now getting so if you do put them out, make sure to put some kind of slug protection out as well!
If it ain't broke...fix it til it is!

I might leave them another week or so, quite windy down here at the moment
