  • My squash has split

    Dear all,
went up to the lottie this am, was proudly checking out my butternut squashes and noticed one has split anyone have an idea what would have caused this? The other two look ok and are a fairly decent size, can anyone advice when to harvest them?

A simerler thing happend to our biggest pumpkin it colapsed and foled inwards, I think its dew to the wether,
I have harvested most of our pumpkins now and keep checing them for soft spots, will cook and frezze if I have to or just make lots of pumpkin pies

The one that has split can you salvage anyof it and cook it today?

I think Dobbys right Laineylou. Some of mine split too. I just used them up and they were fine, but no good for storing. Well, you can only eat them once .

My soup making isn't a pricise science I'm afraid Dobby, it's just a case of bung it all in and hope for the best!
              This is what I put in my Lettuce soup and it was yum;

1 small onion -fried off then add-
bunch of celery - chopped, stir then add
some veg stock i use marigold boullion about 1L (give or take)
then i chucked in 3 lettuce, chopped up and let them wilt
then i added 300g cashew nuts (makes it nice and creamy without adding cream/milk)
Simmer for about 20 mins then bliz in the processor
thats it! (nice served with some lovely bread and lots of black pepper)
This one is also nice done with spinich instead of lettuce.

Didn't get to go and retrive squash as my little one has ear ache.

Phew! I thought it was going to be soggy lettuce at twenty paces for a minute.

                              The split..

.... will be due to the skin partially curing in the poorer weather and internal growth re-starting with the more recent sunny weather.
Inflexible skin bursts as the flesh swells.
