Dwarf French Bean - Shirostruczkovnia

At an event held in Taunton today I was given some of the above seeds, in a Heritage Seed Library envelope.

Has anybody got any info they can give me about this variety?

I've googled it and found absolutely nothing

I'm still trying to get to grips with the pronunciation of it!!

I'm wondering if the variety is spelt correctly on the envelope, which is why I can't find anything on the net

I was right - it's spelt shrokostruczkovnia - pronunciation isn't any easier though

Details of this variety were in the 2007 Heritage Seed Library catalogue, I'm almost certain. I can't just lay my hands on the copy at the moment, but will see if I can find it. Otherwise, you may be able to get info through Garden Organic www.gardenorganic.org

Hi Chris, never heard of them but they sound interesting if only because of the name.I found a site that has them(see link below) but all they say is 'many flat mid green pods for eating fresh, early maturing.'

I assume I plant them at the same time as the ordinary french beans.

I also got some yard long beans - has anybody any experience of these?

Hi ChrisB,

I haven't grow the french beans you mentioned but did try the yard long beans again this year. It suppose to be very easy growing beans if provided with the optimum temperature, they love constant warm ( I grew them before when we were living in Singapore, they are really very low maintenance and very productive ). However my experience of growing yard long beans this year is really difficult as we get much cooler summer and they are outside. They grow very slow and don't look that good, I end up in pulling them out and use the space for other veggies. If you have green house it will help them and most of all they need warm summer. Good luck...

This is the info on your bean.. Dwarf French Bean Shirokostruczkovnia : Green Variety
One of the many varieties donated by Harlow Carr Botanic Gardens, Roughly translated from the Russian means "broad-podded". White flowers , followed by broad, flat pods produced in profusion. Beat Eaten as a green bean; not stringy and delicious at all stages. One of the earliest varieties to mature.



Incidently if anybody is thinking of Joining the Heritige seed list, the 2008 catalogue is out begining of December, so make your mind up soon. Varieties soon get used up.

These are grown at Audley End I think, I'm sure I saw an article by Mick Lavelle about them in a recent GYO. It was about heritage seeds in general.
