  • Home grown potatoes - yummy!

Ate our first lot of home grown potatoes the other day. Wow! They were fanatastic! Pic attached, also a pic of some of our french beans which have been just as good.

Yep, that's yummy alright especially when you know you grew them yourself. I'm growing potato next year, can't wait.

Isn't it fantastic when you eat your first produce? Knowing that it hasn't been transported miles, has never seen any chemicals or anything else that you don't know about, hasn't cost much (apart from the sweat of your brow mostly) and hasn't added to the profits of cats who are already too fat somehow makes it taste even better!

The rest of them were about the size of small marbles, so I've left them. Does anyone know roughly how long it will take them to grow to a good size?

By the way, the variety is Carlingford, they were planted end of July I think.

            Hi CF,

I think main crop take about 12-16 weeks so if you planted 1st July I would think early November. Have they flowered and the tops died back?

That's a guess though and I am sure some one will know better.

            Enjoy, Mandy

We had a few flowers, but the stems started falling over and splitting, probably due to wind (looked perfectly healthy) so I had to cut them back a bit and use some string round them tied to the wall to hold them up. They were up to 4 foot high from the soil level!

Just keep earthing them up and they will be fine. The tubers will continue to grow.

Thanks. I was worried about disturbing them too much.

Your homegrown meal looks great Cornflake. Your potatoes will only continue to grow though if you've left the foliage on & it's still growing & you didn't detach the tiny spuds from the stems, otherwise they will just stay the same size.
Into every life a little rain must fall.

They are still attached and the foliage seems to still be growing at a good rate.

It's great. I'm still going on about it, much to the annoyance of the rest of the family.

Don't worry, at certain point we all did it, it is just this proud feeling bursting. Enjoy your own harvest...it is very addicting hobby isn't it ?
