Don't know what the reason is, but there haven't been any autumn planting onion sets or garlic bulbs in the shops round here this year. I ended up buying a couple of cloves of garlic from the shop and planting them.

I can't find any either - I thought it was just Southampton being particularly useless, but apparently not!

Probably because they all went to seed prematurely last year!

Wilkinsons were doing a bag for 90p last week don't know if they still have any or you could try one of the seed co's like T&M or Marshalls maybe?

Internet prices end up making it so so expensive with delivery. Keep trying the smaller garden centres

Next time, next year I would know to go there but don't they run out quickly? and besides I don't think they sell red onion sets (as the only kind I'd prefer to grow coz they're more expensive in the shops).

No they weren,t red onion sets, I didn't get any as i had already purchased some "red cross" from Marshalls and sown some shimonita, might give them a go next year though too!

I got mine last week off eBay, worked out less than a pound a bulb, Solent Wight variety.

I get Jerusalem Artichokes, fruit bushes, onion sets, seeds, all sorts of plant stuff off eBay. Never had a problem with any of them

Veg - I was lucky and got free delivery from the internet site, since I ordered onion sets, garlic and potatoes (now happily growing away to hopefully give me enough for christmas day!) But I will look out for delivery charges if I go back for seed .... garden centre is tooo tempting, toooo many other interesting things to spend money on hahah!

I ended up planting supermarket garlic (split into cloves) into cell trays which are sprouting well and going onto the lottie this weekend. My daughter managed to get hold of some Radar Onion sets and Solent Wight garlic (don't know where from) and she's given me a few and I'm giving them the same treatment. Daren't plant straight onto the lottie cos they get eaten or pulled up.

I tried yesterday to order garlic and autumn sowing onioons from T & M but they told me that you had to have ordered by the end of August to get them to plant now. If you order now you will get them for next September ! How daft is that ! Have ordered garlic from The Garlic Farm - downside you have to buy five heads at a time which is more than I have space for but I guess I can eat the ones I don't plant.
