Spuds from the shop in town that has an excellent choice & I can pick numbers of tubers rather than having a 3kg bag. Seed I get from the Organic catalogue/HDRA Ryton or where ever I see some that I fancy.

Well, I must be the only cheapskate, I've been picking up seed packs from Lidl, car boot sales, magazine freebies of course, and I've been given quite a few old packs off my mum. My grandma's verbenas from 1989! didn't come up but apart from that I think everything so far has been fine.

I am a beginner really though so maybe when I have a bit more expertise I'll see the need to spend a little more.

i noticed that alan romans was particularly cheap and kicked myself as I'd already ordered a load of stuff from T&M and paid much more for it! That's why I thought it would be a good idea to start this thread so that everyone could find a good deal. I#m definitely going to get my next batch of seeds from that site.

I listed Alan Roman (#17) and I got most of my poataoes and quite a few seeds from him. Met the man himself at the Dundee Spring Show last week. Very pleasant and informative.

Surprised nobody mentioned D.T.Brown- generally cheaper than the rest, apart from Alan Romans, AND offering a pretty good selection. What I've done is to buy what I can from Alan Romans, then get as many of the rest from DTBrown, then I go onto Tamar, Real Seeds, etc., for specific cv's they inevitably have. I avoid the expensive folk like Suttons and Fothergills as a matter of principle, and I wouldn't buy from T&M. for reasons it'd take too long to explain. I think Simpson's and Nicky's( very good for oriental salads and greens) are worth a look too. Seeds-by-Size have good info.Tucker's have very good range of cvs, particularly good range of squashes, and interesting selection of spuds.

You are best to buy seeds this time of year. This is the period when all the garden centres etc swap last years stock for new stock.

You can often get seeds cheaper than normal. For instance if you want to get T&M seeds in now then you can save up to about 25% on seeds that still have a use by date of 2010..See here

Its all about saving the pennies.

It might be that its cheaper to buy some seed now, but not necessarily the best time. If I've bought all my seed for the next year by the end of summer, what will I do over winter?

For me the best time to buy seeds is from Oct - Feb, looking for seeds and seeing how and what they grow into helps keep the 'winter blues' at bay, preparing for the new growing season. No amount of pennies saved can replace that.

                      lol, OK fair point.

Although I am not sure how much time can be spent through the winter looking at seeds!! Surely you will need something else to keep you going.

Maybe a few repeats of Gardeners World on the UK Living garden channel!

I usually get to about Feb / March and start to doubt if we will ever have sun again.

I have been buying loads from Woolworths and Wilkinsons at the moment as they are selling them off cheap.

I bought so many reduced-price seeds from Wilkinsons on Saturday (they were down to 30p a packet) that my till receipt showed a saving of over £35. I then went to Woolies and bought their T&M seeds that are down to 60p a packet

I'm with Smallblueplant - if you buy cheap seeds now, they are from last year and less viable than this year's savings.

I get a fair amount of mine from real seeds; but I do get others from local nurseries and garden centres; esp if they have stuff for sale that you don't usually see. As I succession sow alot, I like to have more than one variety as well so that they grow at different rates and provide a longer season. I also use T&M/Unwins/other on-line places, esp if a bargain is posted on here like the Mirror offer this week.

I normally get my seeds from my local seedy sunday seed swap.
