I did it with my carrots after someone mentioned it on here. Look at July on my blog: The Hay Wayne: July 2007

Then they probably won't be ready for Christmas right enough - I would still have a poke about on Christmas eve though - even a couple of small spuds each is lovely. We had one tiny carrot each last year with Christmas dinner - yummy (first carrots I ever grew).

            Christmas Veg

We never thought about own-grown veg for Christmas, but this year I can't believe how much stuff is around for us. We have runner beans, french beans and courgettes in the freezer, and onions and garlic stored BUT we have the following fresh:

Leeks - loads of leeks. Kale just coming into full strength, curly and sutherland flat leaved; perpetual spinach going full guns, winter squashes storing nicely and 6 still left uneaten, parsnips - now here's a thing - I've never grown these before as a) not greatly fussed and b) heard they were a bit temperamental. When we took over our lottie last year previous occupant had sown some and we left them to run to seed for the insects. I grabbed a handful of the very ripe seeds 8 weeks ago and carelessly threw them into one of the beds. Zillions of thinnings later (they ALL seemed to germinate) and we have good size, delicious parsnips!!! We can get enough cabbage for a decent meal by picking 2 or 3 lacy individuals and my japanese onions are doing fine and are already big enough to be used as spring onions!!

We have just finished the last of our spuds, so no luck with them, but considering the disastrous season for them, pleased they lasted this long!

Pure luck, and I'm sure other years we won't have anything still on the go at all!!
