GARLIC Help!!

I'm a bit excited!! My garlic that i planted a few weeks ago in pot in my growhouse has started SPROUTING!! There are little green sprouts pointing up through the earth!

OMG!! I'm so excited!!

Now what...? Do i put some more earth on them to keep them cozy...? Transfer them to the bigger beds under cloches...? Leave them...?? I've NEVER done gARLIC BEFORE.. I'VE READ mURRAYS THREAD ON GARLIC BUT I'M STILL NOT VERY CLEAR!

There are three cloves to a pot... about an 8inch pot. I honestly didn;t think they would come to much hence 3 bulbs to a pot!

I've tried reading some of my books but none seem to cover garlic in any detail!

Any more advice of help much appreciated!!

I think they will need more room than that. Also, garlic needs cold weather to make the bulb split into cloves so don't mollycoddle it too much. This is all learned from reading the vine so hang fire and someone who has successfully grown the stuff will be along.

Were you intending to grow them full time in pots, or plant out into open ground? Do you have a veg plot, allotment or border that you can plant them into? I've started mine in cell trays in the cold greenhouse (one per cell). One lot (supermarket bulb split into cloves and planted) has been planted out on the lotment now for around 4 weeks. The other (Solent Wight) has sprouted in the greenhouse, but can't get to the lottie at the moment to plant out as it has been really wet at the weekends and I work fulltime.

Hello Cyanara, I see you are in the Scottish borders and you can see where I am. Garlic is fully hardy, you can grow it outside. Cold doesn't mater but it does like to be well drained. Here is some I grew last year

Wicked!! Thanks Guys!! I have some wonderful raised veggie beds that hubby built me and i'll transplant them tomorrow... assuming i can brave the winds!!

I'm just so excited that it's growing.. and it's so nice to see little shoots at this time of year!

I didn't know that they needed the cold! Maybe that is why my man in Bulgaria says November Garlic and Spring onions (No not spring-onions, plant them in the spring)

I seem to remember you had an amazing haul of garlic yourself Phreddy. I was excited to see that mine, planted about 4 weeks ago in an old fish box, have emerged. Imagine something being that good for you and so tasty too!

No sign of mine yet, and I planted them a few weeks ago. I think they may well be in too deep, and might be a little wet.

I think I'll buy a couple of bulbs at teh weekend and get them in some pots...

I love garlic too I do!

Mine are up in the polytunnel but no signs of those I planted outside. Exciting to see a bit of new growth at this time of the year.

if i go and get some this weekend can i plant up in cold greenhouse or is it too late. how many cloves to a pot and what type of compost is best

I just potted mine yesterday because I was too busy to plant them last month due to central heating repairs, I planted mine one clove to a 3 inch pot and the elephant garlic one clove to a 4 inch pot.
I will pot them on or plant them out when the roots start to fill the bottom of the pots.

Some of the elephant garlic had started to rot from being in the bag so I threw the mushy ones and cut the bad bits off the others and gave a bathe in diluted ***** fluid to kill fungal growth, it worked last year with some I had given so it should work again this year.

planted mine last month in the allotment they are now 6" plus in height and doing fine despite all the rain and wind we have had luckily the soil is well draining hope you're garlic do as well (mind you i am in the south east)

Heywayne- I dug down to have a look at mine which werent showing thinking I'd have to plant some more and found them with lovely big roots on. It seems that some are just slower than others to show. You might save some dosh if you do the same and have a gentle look.

I planted some garlic cloves about 4 weeks ago and left them in pots outside. It is the first time I have tried garlic and they are doing brilliantly, I have 5' strong green shoots at the moment. Its great to see stuff growing well at this time of year.

Just discovered aproblem with trying to transplant the garlic... apparently -9 degrees C makes for brick hard soil!!!

Note to self... stay inside where it's warm!
