    To plant my Autumn onions?

I bought these: Marshalls Seeds Product Detail- 1040-6047: Onion Autumn Planting Collection
a few weeks ago, but forgot about them until I cleared some junk that had ended up on top of their box.

I hope I still have time to get some in the ground?

No idea, HW, but if I was you, I'd pot them up in a coldframe (or your equivelant of one!) then they can get a start on ready for planting out in - say - Feb/Mar. I would think that anything planted out now is likely to get waterlogged, or frozen!

Mind you, someone who actually knows what they're talking about will be along soon, I'm sure!

From what I've seen on your blog, you know a far deal more than I my dear! I like the idea of potting them up - I've just done the same with garlic. Looks like I'll be buying some more potting compost at the weekend! I might use all the vending cups I've been saving up...

I think ( but am not sure) that the traditional advice is to plant on the shortest day?? Anyone???

Isn't it shallots on the shortest day? From what I've read it's not actually the best advice but I'm going to do it anyway, just because. HW, I'd plant a few of your onions and see what happens!

I've planted out another 250 onions plus shallots today that we've been hardening off in pots for a few weeks, they've been outside in the -8 and they seemed fine today.

HayWayne, go for it, although we have very short winters here they're very cold and the place I was at today isn't the best site wise but if you have raised beds and can put some cover over them at night if it gets too cold, I'd give them a go!

And I always thought it was garlic on the shortest day. At least they are all related.

Go for it HW, I just planted mine a week ago, I got it for trial ( only 10 of them). If you are worried about sogginess, try to set some plastic cover that function like a roof to avoid the water pouring in. Mine were in raised bed and under cloche.

If you have the space and the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged then plant them. If you don't do anything with them you've lost a potential crop - at least if they're planted they have two choices, don't they?

Well, I stuck 10 of each (red, white and erm... standard) in pots yesterday so we'll se how we go. The ground round here is heavy clay - and so easily gets waterlogged this time of year. I'll plant another load in spring, see how we go. One thing I did really well with this year was onions so, fingers crossed.

Thanks for all the tips guys - and gals.
