I planted two named varieties in September ( I always start them off in pots) planted them out in the allotment in mid Oct with a sprinkle of chicken pellets around each plant. Plants are about 6/8in tall and doing well at moment. I also seem to get rust on them come spring, but to no ill effect. I still have a good supply from last year which will see me through to May/June.

Oops, just re-read my post above and I think I'm getting confused between hardneck and softneck... time for a holiday I think!!!
Having said all that, I'm about to order some Moldovan Purple Garlic soon, it's a hardneck so apparently less hardy - I'd like to hear if any northern grapes have tried growing the stuff, and how it got on... would you recommend starting it off in pots in the coldframe and planting out in late spring?

I grow the stuff from the RGC peeps in a cold greenhouse border; it's a hardneck and as you say produces big juicy, sweet cloves. It should be emerging quite soon (everything crossed) and I give it a nitrogenous feed in late spring/early summer - end of March to end of May depending on the weather.
If some one can reccomend a soft neck I'd be willing to give it a go...

Ive got 135 cloves of various types in pots almost all starting to peek through the surface of the compost, it would have been 136 but I ate one clove whilst potting up.

          cheers Chris
