  • The Chileman challenge

The chileman challenge for next year has been announced and it's Jalapeno. Last years Big Jim competition was really good fun with maps, flags and all sorts of fun. Quite a few grapes entered and did well against the world. Hope plenty of grapes will enter this year.

Hi Alice, I have been watching for the announcement but did'nt see it anywhere. Glad to know what the challenge is for next year though. It was good fun this year.

I'll be up for that Alice. We really like jalapenos, they make great pickles too.

When it gets going (or now) can we get a Mod to sticky the thread so we don't lose track of it?

Are there any jalapeno's that are very mild or are they all hot?

Haven't clicked the link yet cos my puter is on a go slow! Deffo growing jalapeno's this year! Do they supply the seeds? And risking a few sarky comments, is it the length that counts!

Shirl they pickle really nicely, in rings and aren't too hot. They're great topping for pizza's or natcho's with cheese with jalapenos on top.

Glad you are all interested again. We can sticky the thread once started. Good luck to you all.

(I might even have a go myself this year!)

We've already got 2 jalapeno plants left from this year, one still growing nicely in the kitchen windowsill, and th other in the back yard greenhouse, deffo going to be up for this challenge!

On another note, we've an Aji Dulce in the kitchen with flower buds on it, an Aji Omnicolour in the lounge with a few flowers (and still plenty of last years chillis) on it and a Pimento thats just sprouted a flower in the kitchen, any one else got any chillis doing weird things?

Yup, my Big Jims are still flowering and fruiting (and slowly turning red) and my Bolivian Rainbow is still producing.

                          Thanks for the link Manda!

Most of ours have shed leaves and have no pods on them, but one or two still have good growth and one in particular has pods still on it and seems quite happy, of the 4 that are flowering, 2 were cut back, 1 died back naturally before starting to grow again, and another is still in bushy leaf, after not flowering through the summer, and all seem to be doing fine, so we'll see what happens!

I think the windowsill will do it for you Hazel. And yes, it was great fun. Wait til you see your name on a flag on the world map - and yourself right up there at the top of the leaderboard and your chillies bigger than any body in the worlds. Dream on Hazel, but you know what I mean.
