last year had a bad crop of onions lost 50 percent they had a white fur on the roots it was very wet here sorry to be a bit green round the ears but im a council gardener not veg grower

Sounds like you have a severe case of Onion white rot. This is to alliums what club root is to brassicas.
It's a fungal infection and the spores can remain in the soil for up to 15 years.
All you can do is not plant onions,shallots,leeks or garlic in this area for as long as you possibly can!
If it's wide spread throughout your plot, and you really can't do without alliums, I suppose the only way would be to grow in containers with fresh compost.My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order

I have had a problem with onions from sets for several years. Last year I grew them from seed and didn't have a problem. Might be worth a tryGardening requires a lot of water - most of it in the form of perspiration. Lou Erickson, critic and poet
