Too late to sow tomato seeds?

Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone could tell me if it is too late to start growing tomatoes? My partner and I have just started allotmenting this year and have been sowing so many things that we seem to have missed tomatoes.

The packet I have says sow from late Feb to the end of April.

Welcome to the forum. I think you will be fine sowing your tomatoes now. They may well take some time to catch up, but they will grow just as well.

My first sowings go in at the end of January and at present they are forming fruit on their first trusses. I sow a second sowing about now and these plants replace the ones sowed earlier. I must add that they do live in a poly tunnel and crop through until Christmas.

If you are planting them outside I would reccomend that you buy some plants as it will probably be too late for them to give you a worth while crop until very late in the season and blight becomes an all to real threat.

I have to seed my toms again, had an accident with a seed tray but they were showing no signs of life - I have planted them this late, especially as I grow mine outdoors and they have done fine. I also pop down to the garden centre and buy some seedlings - I did this today and got five plants for 75p, just to cover all bets!

Thanks Tigger for your kind offer, however someone at work today has given me some seedlings. Hopefully with them and the seeds I have planted I should have some luck! Thanks for all your messages.

If you keep them within a greenhouse you'll probably get a nice late crop, but if you're planting them outside you'll just get a few tomatoes as I planted mine late last year and didn't really have a good crop to rely on. I'd plant a few and keep them indoors, but also go down to the Garden centre and get some plants for cheap - I was in Dobbies at the w/e and they had tons of tomatoes on offer - they all looked a little underfed and droopy, but you'll be able to find some that are OK and they will need a little love and care and hardening off before you plant them out.

Thanks folks for advice given, i have just planted a load into our poly tunnel, but seriously underestimated how many i would need so will go and get some alisa craig in the prop now me thinks
