I'd worry about modern walpaper pastes - I think they contain fungicides. I've also used halves kitchen towel middles - work out the same size as loo rolls.

I would be honoured! Fame at last
I was looking through my veggie gardening books last night to try and find where I learned about this tip, but none of them had it. So I think I must have learned it off another Grape on the forum (maybe Geordie?) a couple of years ago. Jeannine - I don't want to claim it as my own invention but if you want to quote me, maybe you could point out what a great source of info the Vine is?Last edited by Birdie Wife; 16-01-2008, 10:01 AM.

Just reviving this thread as I've sown some parsnips today in loo rolls. They're in my sunny conservatory. Can anyone give me advice about watering? And should I put them in my heated propagator or just leave them unheated?
thanks for any advice

I don't actually sow the seeds in the loo roll middles. I let the seeds sprout on damp kitchen roll in a ply bag on the kitchen windowsill. Then when they have a little white sprout showing I transfer this to the top of a loo roll full of compost and sprinkle a little more on top. Then you know every one's a winner. A soon as there are 2 true leaves get them into the ground as there may well be a taproot showing out the bottom even at this stage. I water them with my can with a fine rose and stand them close together in a plastic box. I don't use any heat to propagate them other than the warmth from the kitchen heating.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.
