I'm trying to grow Valdor and Rouge d'Hiver in the cold greenhouse. They are doing okay - I hope they'll put on a spurt when it warms up a bit so we can have salad leaves from March. One minor problem has been greenfly which surprised me a bit in December.Julie

I had some going quite well into October November and despite being close to frozen outside recently some are still straggling on.
More experiemntal really but those under cloches did less well. May have been a bit too comfy for the fungal friends under there.
I am sure they will be fine in a greenhouse or inside now and take off outside when weather warms, maybe Feb /March I geuss.

Probably not the same as Winter Gem , mine's called Winter Density (cos type lettuce), sown in Sep indoors and planted out in Nov or Dec (can't remember) because I was fed up of these sitting on my kitchen window sills .
I tried to protect them initially from frost but got lazy and left them to the elements of frost many times and they survived despite being seedlings, thinking the clue is in 'Winter' and partly my reason for buying this particular strain. They're taking a glacial amount of time to grow but I ain't complaining. My advice is if you plant out, make sure they're as big as you can get them because the little ones do die, even then I'm still talking of seedlings. I like to think I'm doing a bit of 'survival of the fittest' experiment with veg strain to account for my lazy habits .Food for Free

Got a packet of Winter Gem lettuce seed in my GYO prize from the veg show. Haven't sown them though. May try a few now. Says germinate at 60 degrees which I've always understood to be a bit too hot for lettuce. Actually I may sow a few in cell trays either tonight or tomorrow.
