  • Onion sets

Hi, I picked up some very cheap onion sets the other day. According to the packet the are supposed to be planted in September, October & November. Does anybody know whether they will grow if I plant them now?

    Thanks

Someone else asked this just a few days ago. I have also bought some sets that were supposed to be planted then.

I have decided to bung mine in the ground - might be today as the sun is shining - and see how they do. If they are not doing much by the time I have other stuff to plant out, then the onions are easy enough to remove.
    Happy Gardening,

As long as they haven't dried out they should at least grow leaves. I would plant them close together either in pots indoors or outdoors in the soil. That way they can be used as early spring onions! The leaves could be used in winter salads or soups!
I wouldn't waste too much space on them though as proper spring planted onion sets are very cheap and you have a lot more chance of growing decent onions from them!

Does it say what variety they are? If you knew that you could at least Google or look them up in a reference book.

I just bought some red onion sets today in Wilkinsons so they must be OK for planting now or why sell them now?

            cheers
Before you criticise someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.

They will be OK for planting in the Spring but now is a bit too early!
