Cherry toms

I see that RHS did trials last year on cherry tomatoes. Twelve of which were given an AGM award. Three of which are not yet available. The sweetest of of them all was Rosada F1 from Thompson and Morgan, it is also supposed to be superb flavour. I personally am not so keen on to much sweetness and prefer a bit of acidity. What do other viners think. I also noticed that there is a free packet of cherry toms on GYO mag next month.

I have grown a few of the varieties that they trialled. Rosada, interestingly, were very pleasant but took an absolute age to ripen compared to all the other cherry tomatoes I grew. I am not keen on the super-sweet ones such as Sungold, either, and I only grow them for others to enjoy.

My top variety last year was Berry F1, from Marshalls. Early, prolific and tasty.

I grew Berry and Sungold and preferred the latter! Taste is VERY subjective. I'm not even certain that people mean the same thing by terms such as sweetness and acidity. My next door neighbour swears by gardener's delight and I find them bland! You can only try things yourselves - shame some of these new ones aren't available yet. What's the betting they're F1?

All 12 varieties awarded the AGM were F1. apparently sweetness is measured by the Brix reading (????) the Rosanda measured 10.5% and the least sweetest measured 8.5% so not a lot in it really.

This year i'm growing Gardeners Delight (again) and Sungold for the first time in years. They cost a bit though.

I know exactly what you mean about Gardener's Delight, I had the same experience with my neighbour's GD, tried it and it was 'oh so bland' that I've had even tastier cherry ones from supermarket. I heard that the GD seeds can vary from one supplier to another and look forward to trying out Real Seeds yellow, sweeter version. I think Sungold is good as they say it is but I find not chunky enough and the skin's too thin if it makes any sense but my DH is number one fan.

Both GD and Sungold are available from Alan Romans for 50p each (although only a meagre 6 seeds for Sungold ).
