Thanks for your replies Sarah and Ian. Your squash certainly looks similar to mine, Sarah, though mine is elongated. I was just surprised by the fruits on this plant because my daughter, who gave me the seedling, grew it from seeds she took from her pumpkin she grew last year and she says it is nothing like she had.

I've just had a look on the Real Seed site and it says that to get seed from your squashes you should hand-pollinate to avoid cross-pollination. To stop bees and other insects taking pollen from one variety to another you should put an elastic band round the flowers to keep them closed. Perhaps this is the answer to why my squash differs from the one my daughter took her seeds from.

I thought that Shark Fin Melon was what the Chinese referred to as what we know as Spaghetti Sqaush?

^ No, it's malabar or fig leaved gourd.

No, this is a spaghetti squash - I've got dozens of these on my plot.

I have to report that the 'green monster' is starting to show a slight tinge of orange today, so it seems it is not a Sharks Fin. Not sure if I'm disappointed or pleased
