  • Are they too cold?

Hello there, I have a new family that have moved into a delightful glass residence at the bottom of my garden. A Duke of York and his lovely wife Maris Piper and all their lovely little ones. They have very little furniture and seem to be a little cold at night. They have only 2 layers of fleece over them for night time cosyness and protection. Should I offer me help of another layer of fleece or will they be OK? I would offer them to come and stay with me but me husband does get a little ratty when he finds others coming to stay! Will they be OK?

    HA!
So long as they are kept frost -free you should be fine with that amount of fleece ( there are different grades though)
If you know it's going below 4C then I'd pop a bit more fleece on them. Greenhouses in their unheated state don't really make much of a difference to the temperature- just eliminate the windchill factor ( or so I understand!)

To help them out you could try to get them a sofa of polystyrene. It would cut the chill from sitting on the floor. Maybe you know someone who has just had a new washing machine or some such.

It's a chancy thing trying to grow potatoes without any form of heat at this time of year.

You may hit lucky or you may not.

Watch the weather forecast and if frost is forecast light a candle and stick a bucket over the top of it in close proximity to the spuds. The candle will heat the bucket (galavanised metal of course!) and give off enough heat to chase away Jack Frost, hopefully!

Keep the pots of spuds on the staging rather than the floor, the added bit of heat may be just enough to stop them getting frosted!

        Good luck!
