I have germinated my supermarket chickpeas on damp kitchen towel, and they sprouted within 2 days.
They are now potted up in loo rolls in the cold greenhouse

'Tother way around - lenses were so-called because they are lentil-shaped (Latin lens "lentil"). Makes sense really, since we humans were eating lentils long before we started making lenses

I assume they are the round type of peas (starchy), rather than the wrinkled ones that are sweet and nicer to eat fresh? I guess you'd want a yellow variety of those, though a quick Google didn't find anything on this side of the Atlantic...

Google and Wikipedia say it's Field Pea Pisum sativum arvense, as opposed to Garden Pea Pisum sativum

There are 4 types of Pisum sativum in cultivation today: a traditional old starchy variety called marrowfat peas (mushy peas are produced from them); the mangetout/sugar snap type; the garden pea; and petits pois, a miniature variety of the garden pea

Chickpeas look like yellow split peas that haven't been de-husked and split!

Sorry Maureen, just shooting off on my own little tangent!

After I asked about yellow split peas I went to google images and found a place that sell the split peas but also gave a picture of the peas before they were de husked and split.

All I was saying was that chickpeas LOOKED like the full split peas, with husk.........unsplit!

Sorry for the confusion to both you and rocketron!

I have just ordered some lentil seeds because we eat a lot of them and now have an allotment. I hope I've done the right thing.
We have the easiest recipe ever which is boil lentils (.5 pack serves 2-3) with a stock cube and if wished curry powder (onion optional) when soft add noodles (1 nest per person). These take about 3-5 mins. Serve and top with Olive oil and lemon juice. (parmesan cheese is an option as well) and enjoy. This is a middle eastern recipe.
                                Pinkle
PS this is my first post on this site so hi everyone.
