    i was given a section of suger cane from a friend which travels to India regularly but i wasn't told weather it spreads and how tall it gets can anybody help

      I grew a close relation of sugar cane last year, it's huge, close to 8ft tall, quite pretty, great huge plume on the top. Massive root system - looked as if it could drill through concrete no problem and drinks gallons of water and likes chicken poo. I've left it in its pot to see what happens this year.

            Sorry, bluespuggy, don't think you will get any worthwhile results in this country. Why do you think UK producers grow sugarbeet instead of sugarcane? My understanding is that sugarcane only grows well in tropical climates, but if you just want to grow one for interest rather than a useful crop, then give it a try. Please let us know how you get on.

              I agree that you won't get a "crop" but it's an interesting plant to grow and a good talking point!
