Early Potatoes

Hi there, anyone have time for clueless brunette?

I've decided I want to try my hand at potatoes this year and was intending to start with early 'salad' potatoes, such as Mimi. However someone else has suggested I try Amandine or Annabelle? Any thoughts folks? I know I should get my skates on and get started, but I don't know enough to make the decision and I trust you.....

Or you could try all three, they all sound loverly. Is there any way you can buy 3 different variety of seed potatoes but in smaller quantity like picking your own from a nursery or garden centre. I think Amandine is not that common unless you buy them from an exclusive supplier on the Net.

You know, I didn't really think about that, but yes, I guess I could grow all three! Thanks Veg4681, that's just the push I needed Of course, if I can't find Amandine then it's not to be, but I'm going to take a look this weekend at the local nursery and see what I can come up with. I'll let you know

I grew a few Arran Pilot in a big pot last year - great yield and a wonderful salad spud. They are also fairly easy to get hold of. Charlotte, Arran Pilot AND Anya this year!

I am going to start some Charlotte in buckets in the greenhouse as soon as I remember to buy more chicken manure pellets.

I haven't tried the potatoes type you mentioned yet. Do you like their taste ? If yes, go for it.... I am going to plant some Nicola for early spud and Salad blue plus Highland Burgundy Red for main spud. As I have limited space, they are going to be potted too.

Apparently Amandine is cross between Charlotte X Mariana and Annabelle is Nicola X Mona Lisa so you get to taste a little of at least 4 different potatoes there . I would have gone for both if I could buy them without the online or mail order.

has anyone tried pink fir apple? I'm chitting mine now, but I've never eaten one, and I'm wondering what they taste like....

I’m going to grow Arran pilots and sante potatoes to see how they do and taste, might get some pink fir apple and give them ago sound nice just looked them up and found this on them (A late maturing salad potato with distinctive, long, knobbly tubers. Yellow flesh with "new potato" flavour even after storage. Slow to chit, so start off in the dark and move into the light when the sprouts appear)

I think Alice grow Pink Fir potato before and she said very tasty.

Arran Pilot are my all time favourite (at the moment) I prefer them to Pink Fir's. They are just so waxy and tasty

Well thank you for your advice! It sounds like Arran Pilot could be a winner - I have to confess to not having paid too much attention to spuds in the past, so I'll likely try a couple of different varieties and see how I get on. Thanks again
