    hi guys
i dont mean to sound stupid, but i grew some jalepeno chillis last year and they did ok, albiet a little late, anyway they were cracking little bushes.
anyway to cut a long story short they died in the greenhouse, i thought the frost had got them, but listening to you guys planting seeds every year begs me to ask the question, are they perenial plants??
ive just planted some more seeds to have ago again this year...
ive no idea, are they perenials??

Some chillis can be overwintered here, but its not a certainty.

Hello and welcome to the vine Mushty.

The best candidate for overwintering chili that is suitable for europe are C.Pubescens (such as Roccoto) and C Baccatum ( such as aji lemon, aji amarillo...).
In warmer climate, all chili can be grown as parennial.
        I grow, I pick, I eat ...

They certainly are the ones shaped like a penis.

And no not tried bat poo yet, although I hear its excellent stuff but with only just getting into hydro its an expence I can do without this year.

Lol! Thanks thats kind, but I know where ya got 'em from!

I have just managed to germinate one seed, how are yours going? If mine don't grow I'd love to blag one of your pre-grown super-duper root-misted starfish plants? I've got some aji cito that look interesting.....

Am having trouble this year with the slower growing varieties, I think the fact we used cr@p compost as seed compost hasn't helped. Also I'm still thinking there's something slightly awry with the heated prop....

Have you ever used rockwool cubes to germinate chilli seeds in?

I havent planted any yet just waiting for a bit of room in the propagator.
I have tried rockwool on some jals and have some other stuff on the go at the minute there doesnt seem to be difference at the mo from soil.

What is the expected germination time of chillies and the seed viability time. Had mine in 5 or 6 weeks now. 6 varieties (about 4 years old) and not one has come up

Didn't have much luck last year either ...except for one solitary cayenne from a free packet (GYO mag!) Anyway it was snapped after a mishap with the shelving in the greenhouse. ....So then I had to get a numbered variety from West Dean garden's surplus box to replace it....don't seem to have the knack of this eh!

Mind you I had loads from it and there are still some left. Some of you folks could supply a curry house with that lot!!

We have some self saved long yellow chillies which are very hot, some pimento de padron and a few peppadew.

A chillie plant gives far more chillies than people think and we now only grow 4-5 plants and these supply all our family needs.

I'm growing "Anaheim" this year - free seeds with (ahem) another gardening magazine I've never grown chillies before.

I only have jalapeno and scotch bonnet this year just an inch high at the moment but nice and green. I did start them in the heated propagator, but took them out as soon as they germinated!

I'm growing far too many to mention! Must be pushing 100 varieties, may be over, but not counted them in a while! I'm most excited about 7 pod/pot and the nagas!

What are 7 pod/pot? I'm ignoring the 'over 100 varieties' I'm sure thats not possible!

I had 3 Romanian Hot chili plant last year, they were very productive (produced a bit over a kg of chilies/plant) and after giving away to family and friends we got around 2 kg left. Because they were sweet and mild I deseeded 2 kg without using any gloves (thinking that it will be ok) BUT it was a disaster, I got burning pain on my hands for 3 days. Everytime if I use the romanian hot chili powder for cooking, it bring me back to this painfull hands. I won't be that careless again, learned my harsh lesson .
One of the funniest things I ever saw was at a barbie one bonfire night when one of the chaps there chopped a few chillies for some dish he was preparing, then sat by the fire in a deckchair. After a few minutes he surreptitiously and unthinkingly did that blokey thing - you know the one - I didn't know men could have such a shrill scream.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.
