Windowsill Vegetables

Hi All,

I live in an flat in central birmingham which does not have a balcony - but it does have a big bay window sill in the lounge wich will get nice and warm and sunny in the summer.

Its my first summer of ever not having access to a garden or allotment (bar my dads house which is a 30 mile trek away) so I am looking to grow some stuff inside, not too much because theres only me. I have successfully grown apache chillis inside in the past but would like some suggestions from you as to varieties of veg to grow inside. I'd like a cherry tomato, peppers and an indoor cucumber if possible. Please could you post any recommended varieties to me?

Hmmm....I'm thinking of bush variety of cherry-small sized tomatoes (tumbler, tumbling tom, balconi, gartenperle, minibel, maskotka, lilliput, totem, tiny tim, yellow pigmy) and smaller fruiting sweet peppers (Cubanelle/Biscayne type, Marconi Ross, Topepo Rosso etc) and aubergines (eggplant type with fruit the size of egg). I can't see any reason why you can't have cut & come again salad leaf mix and lettuces. Apparently dwarf french beans and watercress grow well in container too and not forgetting potted herbs.

There is a kind of pea that is suited to growing in pots too - I have bought the seeds (T&M but can't remember variety offhand) with the intention of putting them on my office windowsill. I may also put a tomato plant there - have tumbling tom and some baby bush plums to try.

What an interesting experiment - please give us updates on how you get on with your windowsill growing.

Sounds like you've got really good answers to your questions already, but just wanted to mention that rocket is very happily to grow on a windowsill too (and it seems daft to pay shop prices for it).

Also, I'm looking in to decorative plants and houseplants that have fruit or can be eaten - so any info you can pass on this year will be very gratefully received!!!!

On my windowsill at work I've got a tamarillo plant and the fruit are bright orange and look so lovely that I've only eaten two so far out of 6 which are ripe at the mo (and they were delicious). They seem to relish the conditions and might be worth trying. I reckon I'll get a bigger crop next year now the plant is a bit more established.

I found a small plant at a boot fair, but you can buy them by mail order from Victoriana.

This is the sort of thing I'd love to do too (although being Glasgow about 2 mins of sun a day in summer )

Im trying some tumbling tom at the moment, but would love to spread out to other veggies.
