  • Crop Rotation - What month is best?

Hi I was wondering if someone can help me out with crop rotation please.

I have 3 x 5ft by 4ft raised beds - Plot 1 is root crops, Plot 2 is brassicas and Ptot 3 is peas, beans and salads.

The thing is I can't work out when the best time is to rotate the beds or can I do it at different intervals?

I still have Carrots in Plot 1 (although nearly all done), Spring cabbages in Plot 2 (ready april) and broad beans/peas overwintering in Plot 3. (not sure when they will be ready)

Have I missed my chance to rotate as I have overwintered crops?
    Thanks
    Tracey

Not too sure what you mean , go along as beds are freed up. I would have thought in Plot 3 (Peas), you could now grow only Brassica and Plot 2 (Brassica) can now have root/onions growing and Plot 1 (Root) can now have the Legumes this year, ready whenever you are.

you just change them round every year. If you grew potatoes in bed one last year, put them in bed 2 this year. Etc etc
Do a Search for "rotation" there are 20 odd threads to look through for more info and advice.
I have four beds, but people have different numbers and styles. Don't let it worry you too much.

Do the best you can. But most importantly, dont worry about it to much, just enjoy it

If you stick a winter 'catch crop' in after a main crop, you're going to alter the rotation anyway!!
The most important thing is to make sure that you plant a different group of plants the next time!

Most peeps follow a traditional 3 yr rotation- if you intend to produce all year ( and why not!!!!????) then go for a 4 yr rotation ...and make sure you feed the soil well at the right time so as not to get pornographic carrots and parsnips

Most overwintered crops - such as carrots should be cleared by March, which gives you time to sort out the soil and plant out in May after the frosts have gone......so you won't have missed the start date for the next rotation!

Of course you'll need to sow certain veg indoors/greenhouse/nursery bed to get them started ( ie in your case , peas and brassicas....unless you intend to buy seedlings????.
