How many spuds????

Thought it might be helpful if people say how many spuds they have got per kilo for different varieties of potato??

Charlotte- 2 kg = 32 spuds
2 kg = 31 spuds

Rocket - 2.5 kg = 32 spuds

Just thought it'd be helpful working out how many you need ( I ALWAYS overbuy and have to find tubs/pots/willing neighbours/relatives....)????

Traditional planting distances are as follows:

First Earlies, Second Earlies and Salad varieties:
12in/30cm apart and 4in/10cm deep in rows 18in/45 cm apart.

Maincrop varieties:
15in/40cm apart and 4in/10cm deep in rows 24in/60 cm apart.

I bought the 'Blight resisters' from Garden Organic, 5 lots of 1Kg.

I was quite surprised by the numbers......

Colleen (1st early) 13
Orla (1st Early) 19
Milva (Early main) 16
Robinta (Early main) 14
Valor (later main) 14

This was rather more than I was expecting, but I'm sure I'll find space for them somewhere. Already put 1 Colleen in a pot for the greenhouse

The spuds seeds in Netherlnds comes in several sizes which stated as certain grade. Each grade category has it's weight range, once you know the grade, you can roughly calculate the amount. I don't know if it will work the same in UK but it is does, you can calculate yours .

I actually don't understand this size thing with spuds.
I used to think that the bigger the spud, the larger the crop, and then didn't Monty Don prove that wasn't the case??
Also my neighbour cuts her spuds into 3 or 4 and plants them, and her yield is as big as mine!
Ours are classified by size and class- but I've yet to understand quite the difference (...apart from the size bit!!)

The potato farmer (in NL) I asked said the same, he said the spud seeds size don't guarantee the final result but they usually prefer to grow those the size of chicken eggs (or a bit smaller). I don't know why, he said it is just standard issue and more economic.

I will ask more If we go there again (we shop from our local farmers for eggs and some veggies which I don't grow). All the best with your spud counting ...

Hi all

Sorry to sort of barge in on this topic - and thanks very much for the planting distances, Nicos. I remember reading a thread a while back which gave a rough idea of sowing to harvesting times for earlies, 2nd earlies and maincrops. I wonder if someone could point me in the right direction please.

This year I'm not growing spuds on the Allotment (only have a 1/2 plot), but have decided to grow in bags at home as an experiement. Bought some Charlottes (2nd earlies) from the supermarket which are chitting away nicely, and if this works, I may save some of the new crop to see if I can repeat the venture for Christmas 2008. Again, I recall Medwyn Williams suggesting that 2nd early varieties are good for Christmas harvesting.
