I use a black plastic sheet from Asda priced at £2.99 for a 1.5 x 10 metre section. It is plastic, but perforated to allow rainwater to drain. I used it last year and it worked well. It was put-down at this time, I then cut holes for the pumpkins, squash and courgettes and took it up to manure at the start of the year, it had done a good job of killing weeds and I've had minimal problems with weeds on that section since.

I'm extending this over the next season and doing a larger area which I will supress while I get the rest of the lottie up to scratch, I'll then uncover some of it and use the remainder for the pumpkins etc. I'm hoping that by doing this in a different section each year it will help me clear the plot easier - great for the 'time-poor' gardeners!

It's those who don't acknowledge their mistakes who are bound to repeat them and do no learn and grow. None of us are done making mistakes or overflowing with righteous wisdom. Humility is the key.'

I've just phoned my local recycling centre, and they've said I could have some, but the bins are cleared regularly so I will need to see what's available.... will let you know how I get on.

Didn't think of that. Thought of crisps boxes-outers they are poor quality b/c they don't need to hold much or hold securely.
For me a good source is the local 'white goods' seller. They remove the packing before selling.
