I use a black plastic sheet from Asda priced at £2.99 for a 1.5 x 10 metre section. It is plastic, but perforated to allow rainwater to drain. I used it last year and it worked well. It was put-down at this time, I then cut holes for the pumpkins, squash and courgettes and took it up to manure at the start of the year, it had done a good job of killing weeds and I've had minimal problems with weeds on that section since.
I'm extending this over the next season and doing a larger area which I will supress while I get the rest of the lottie up to scratch, I'll then uncover some of it and use the remainder for the pumpkins etc. I'm hoping that by doing this in a different section each year it will help me clear the plot easier - great for the 'time-poor' gardeners!
