Not much help really but I've sown some Wilko ones today in a bucket of horse manure topped with some compost (like it said on the packet). I can report back when/if I get any results!I was feeling part of the scenery

I bought a "brown" mushroom kit from my local garden centre yesterday. £6.49 and it's about the size of a large shoe box. No idea how many mushrooms I'm likely to get, but according to the destructions the box is the growing container, so unless they keep on coming, not many.A simple dude trying to grow veg. http://haywayne.blogspot.com/

Shrooms like to be shady and moist (mother used to grow hers under the bed in trays - we didn't have central heating back then)

I have grown my mushroom from the spawn ( Franchi / Seeds of Italy dry granular spawn), a ready all in one (pregrown in sawdust/straws) and I have grown them from self propagated spawn too.
It is really depending on which mushrooms you are growing as it will dictate the growing medium, optimum temperature, etc. Most mushrooms growing failed due to contaminations. What type of mushroom are you growing ?Last edited by momol; 12-02-2008, 06:17 PM.I grow, I pick, I eat ...

I think you should get succes with button mushroom, if they come with those pregrown hifa, just open the box , cover it with some compost (better to use new compost). Do not scattered it in your plot, it need specifiek temp for it's primordial mushroom to development (plus has to be in dark area too).I grow, I pick, I eat ...

I've always been so excited, and then disappointed, by those mushroom kits. We would get a very small number of, admittedly, beautiful looking fungi, but certainly not as many as we expected.
I think it's hard to find somewhere constantly dark yet at the right temperature in the average house.
I am sure I shall try again soon, however, as I am quite determined (and forgetful )

CC, if you have celler, it will work best as celler has cool and constant temp plus dark . make sure your celler is a bit humid as too dry won't help the botton mushroom growth/ productions.
You could alternatively grow more than the box you buy by giving them more growing media made of a mix of : compost, wetted straw, horse manure, lime. Pre compost them together and then sterilize them with pressure cooker/ steamer...mind you, lots of work plus you will have the risk of contaminations !!! But it is really fun, I haven't take the hard way for button mushrooms but did it before with shitake, shimeiji & red wine cap mushrooms.
I just grow my king oysters several days ago and it seems to do well... finger crossed .I grow, I pick, I eat ...
