  • Worm and compost

hi. I dislike waste. I don't have a garden and want to do something with vegatable and banana peels. have I got this right.

Container with drainage. Wet newspaper. Layer of soil. Vegetable peel. worms bought from fishing shop.

leave alone. In a few weeks compost.

HOw I know this I don't know. maybe childhood memory. But I am very inexperienced at gardening.

A wormery, we bought one rather than making one although its easy enough. We've no garden or private outdoor space so ours is inside works effectivly and no horrid smells. You get compost yes, also the liquid you drain off can be diluted and used as plant food.
You have to be carefull not to put in dense or very strong tasting veg ie onion and citrus or so book that came with it says. Its a very popular method for composting.
    Good luck with yours

Youve got it pretty much! I would add another layer of shredded newspaper over the top of the veg peelings otherwise you'll get gazillions of fruit flies which are v annoying! Check out the recycleworks worm forum for more info - there are lots of eager wormers on there who have built their own wormeries.

Also go real easy at first feeding them as they will probably have been fed different food (if anything) at the tackle shop and it takes time (a month or so) to get all the other bugs n beasties established in the right proportions.

If you've only one container how do you seperate the worms from the poo?

I'd think it was easier to have stackable containers? Its certainly easy to empty and fill our can-o-worms, but there are lots of stacking designs out there. Some sort of sump with a tap for drainage is good for collecting the useful liquid.
