I've got red sun shallots, I grew them last year as well, and was really pleased with them (still got some left, had a bumper crop).

I'm in SE London and we have had a couple of wicked frosts and so I am going to wait a couple of weeks - I know people have been planting out over the last couple fo weekends but I guess it depends on the weather near you (and how desperate you are to get started!)

You may be OK to plant out direct in Wiltshire. Here in East Anglia I've started mine off in cell trays in the cold greenhouse. Just starting to sprout. First time I've used Red Sun shallots and Red Karmen onions. Looking good at the moment, looking forward to harvest (months away yet).

Hi, I'm also from sunny Wiltshire and planted some Red Sun shallots last week.
It's a little early to tell wether or not they are ok but I planted a lot of onions and shallots this time last year and they were fine.
I'm more concerned with the onion sets I planted in autumn, many have simply rotted with all the rain.

Last year I planted some in February and kept the rest until beginning of April. The ones planted in April came on much quicker and they were all ready to lift at the same time. I think I will wait until April when the weather has warmed up to plant mine.

I have been adviced with my onions and shallots to sit them in a shallow tray of compost in a light cool place, apparently they will start growing roots then in a few weeks I can transplant them into the lottie. Anyone know if this is good advice?

Very good lainey lou. It gives them chance to put some roots down. You can use cells (modules) too. Once the little shallot is rooting and shooting you can carefully transfer it to it place on your veg plot and the birds won't manage to grab the tops and scatter them around. They are looking for nesting material and a nice strawey bit of shallot top is tempting.

                        Hi
Small world! I got an allotment just over a year ago. It's pretty big and can be hard work keeping on top of it, but I love it. What about you?

Thanks for the help with the profile, I'm a special case when it comes to computers!!

ive just changed my garden about so im now growing in 3 raised beds and loads of hanging baskets and containers.

toms are going in the hanging baskets as well as some bush types in containers.

                          bed 1
                          onions
                          shallots
                          leeks
                          spring onions

                          bed 2
                          parsnips
                          beetroot
                          turnips
                          swede

                          bed 3
                          red cabbage
                          broccoli
                          3 varieties of lettuce
                          spinach

                          containers and troughs
                          carrots
                          radish
                          spring onion
                          salad leaves
                          runner beans
                          french beans

its very addictive it my 1st proper year missed the season last year.

My shallots have been in modules ina cold greenhouse for a few weeks and are all shooting nicely, so will try to get them and all the onion sets in this weekend, but will be covering them in fleece to keep the birds off and to protect from frost a little.
