  • What seeds would you collect ?

Grapes, this is just out of curiosity and for general chat .

I know it sounds silly but after 3 years GYO I find my self collecting more and more seeds of certain group such as tomatoes, squashes, leafy brassicas,etc... I didn't mean to collect more than 10 types of tomatoes nor more than 10 types of squashes for my small back garden but it happen.
Did you do the same and what seeds did you end up in collecting ?

    Thanks for sharing .

I'm still at the 'bit of everything' stage of veg gardening, Momol - but I can well imagine that I will gravitate toward collecting different beans, or maybe tomatoes in due course...

chillis have around fifteen varieties, and have been gravitating towards tomatoes, currently have about ten varieties but have a list of wants. just not enough room to ever manage to grow them all at once.

So that's peppers (chilli & sweet), tomatoes, aubergines, french beans & shelly beans, summer squash....

I know what you mean Momol, I call it 'variety chasing obsession'. For me it started with tomatoes then it extended to winter squashes (not really pumpkin though), then lettuces (just love looking at the various types of leaves and colours). Now I find myself thinking of different summer squashes, fantasize over growing various shapes of sweet peppers (not chilli though) and guess what, I want to try all the different variety of the previously despised Swiss Chard and Kale . And there's French beans that I want to try around 3-5 new variety each year. I am going crazy .

I think you'll find that by far, the tomato is probably the most common addiction.

I know but it is getting sillier as I always told my self that I don't need 10 or more different toms / squash/ chilies for eating . I am aware this GYO hobby can be very addictive (I am seeing it from the positive view) and most of all I am enjoying the growing, the harvesting and the eating .

I started off with tomatoes but reallised that I only need a few varieties, same with chillies. I am now big time into heritage climbing beans and peas. The peas oh so out perform the modern dwarf varieties.

Don't worry, I think it will either pass or settle down as we get clever at separating the fabulous ones from the mediocre ones...ultimately slowing down the hunger for more. For most vegetable, you cannot have as zillion variety as the tomato so exploration can end within 2 years of trialling but not easy with chillies as they go on and on and on.

I usually only grow tomatoes in baskets due to space and blight. However this year I have ended up with about 12 different types of tomato. So I have made myself a new tomato frame on the lottie which I should be able to get 6 tomatoes in and I saw a growbag frame in the garden center the other day for a tenner and will get another 3 in there. May have to go and get another growbag frame.

I currently have around 10 varieties of tomato seed - not by design - just the way it worked out. With the help of one of our fellow grapes, this is set to rise to 16 I think. Have sort of decided in future years only to grow regular and cherry varieties of tom. Chillis and peppers are also my thing. Last year I tried to grow around 6 varieties of chilli, but had very poor germination, resulting in only 2 varieties - neither of which got as far as fruiting, so no chillis! So this year I'm aiming for around 6 again.

I am glad to hear that eventually most of us will end up collecting certain seeds group .
Not that I am the "in control" freak but it makes me feel bad buying so much seeds yet I only select couple at the end. I am sure that eventually I will only go for certain seeds which I really like (taste wise) as it has been my long term plan plus as part of being more organized. Thanks for the replies grapes .

I don't consciously collect seeds but I do have rather a lot, mostly freebies from magazines and competitions. Most of them are unopened as I tend to use the same varieties each year unless I know for sure that a certain variety is going to be better. I don't see the point in wasting time and heat on something I may hate.

p.s. And I only have two pairs of shoes.
